Rico 12th in First Trophy Cup

PETERSEN MEDIA: The excitement during the final night of Trophy Cup isn’t necessarily where you finish in the feature, but where you end up finishing in the point standings, and 19-year-old rookie, Rico Abreu survived the 50-lap feature and scored 12th in the 2011 Trophy Cup standings.

Trophy Cup is an event where divers earn points every time they’re on the track, and the top 20 in points after Saturday night heats are locked into the feature.

Abreu set his weekend up nicely as he timed in sixth fastest during qualifications aboard his Abreu Vineyards/Kaeding Performance/Maxim with 69 cars checked in for the first night of action.

Heat races took the top three finishers directly to the feature, and Abreu was on the outside looking in, being relegated to the B.

During B-main action, Abreu put on a clinic and wired the field, picking up the win aboard his Swift Metal Finishing/Santomauro/SCI backed entry moving on to the 30-lap feature.

The Friday feature had the top-12 drivers in points inverted making up the first 6 rows, and Abreu found himself lining up outside the second row.

Abreu held strong during the feature, as the ultra slick track began taking rubber half-way through the feature.

While Abreu didn’t find the rubber initially he lost a few spots, but scored an 8th place finish, and was eighth in Trophy Cup points heading into Saturday.

Saturday night heat races were completely inverted, and a last chance to tabulate points before the feature.

Abreu scored seventh in his heat, and sat eighth in points, and lined up the fully inverted feature in the 17th position.

With 50-laps ahead, Rico was patient early in the race, as he worked his way up to the 14th postion, the first quarter of the race, until he was involved in a wreck and had damage of the 19th lap.

His Kaeding Performance crew made the adjustments to the Abreu No.89 and he restarted the race.

As the daunting race continued, it went non-stop from lap 19-48, and Abreu had moved up to the 14th spot.

As the checkered flag flew on the longest race of the season, Abreu was in the 14th spot, and finished his Trophy Cup debut 12th in points.

“This was a good weekend,” said Abreu. “From qualifying to the Saturday feature, I think I learned a lot. It’s no secret that I struggle on the slick stuff, so two nights here are very valuable as we close 2011. I can’t thank all my guys enough and all my sponsors for making my rookie year a successful one.”

Abreu would like to thank Abreu Vineyards, Kaeding Performance, Stadlehofer Construction, Factory Kahne Shocks, Sprint Car Innovations, Santomauro Racing Products, ButerBuilt, Swift Metal Finishing, and 7 Industries for their continued support.
